What is ADHD?
Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurobehavioral disorder characterized by a combination of inattentiveness, distractibility, hyperactivity and impulsivity. When hyperactivity is not a problem, it is referred to as ADD.
Five to seven percent of children are diagnosed with this disorder. Some become disruptive, others simply have difficulty concentrating. Up to half of children outgrow the condition, but the remainder have symptoms that persist into adulthood.
Some people suggest that ADHD may be a collection of normally occurring behaviors that are less tolerated in today’s world. Executive function is affected—attention, emotion regulation and decision-making. Work, school and managing household tasks can be very challenging for people with ADD/ADHD. Often, people with ADD enjoy video games because they provide constant stimulation and minimal "working memory" requirements.
Optimal treatment may include well-known medications such as Ritalin and Adderall. Medications work best when combined with behavioral training, and parents or spouses can learn coping skills.
